Jan Doms nominated for the Bernadine de Neeve Award

datum bericht: 11-11-2017

After the exhibition in the IKA Mechelen (B) of the selected artists for the Bernadine de Neeve Award the jury decided to nominate Jan Doms for his distinctive and monumental way of working with glass. In the spring of 2018 the three nominees show new works in the Jan van der Togt Museum for Modern Art in Amstelveen (NL). Then the jury decides who will be the winner of the Bernadine de Neeve Award.

Collaboration Jan Doms & Ernst Bonis

In the glass training center IKA Doms presented a modified version of the project, Rising Sun, which previously was shown during the Glasstec 2016 in Dusseldorf (DE).

Rising Sun consists of a series of ten round hanging hardened glass discs (with an increasing diameter of 100 cm to 150 cm) to be played. Electronica and compositions by musician Ernst Bonis form the setting for a musical instrument that sounds like a carillon.

The origin of this glass and electronics project is the Ballad of the Rising Sun (Biënnale Kijkduin - The Hague 2011) where drummer Ries Doms played the hanging glass discs in collaboration with Strijbos & van Rijswijk electronic composer showroom. Other musicians involved were: Yuka Kawabe, Paul van Kemenade and Quintet, Wout Kemkens and the Westland Men's Choir, and others.

The positioning in the spaces and the applied electronics techniques of both versions are completely different.
